About GEN NEXT

Driving One of Golf’s Greatest Legacies

At its core, this strategy is not simply about growth, programs, or infrastructure. It is about stewardship.

Generation Next Project is intentionally rooted in a belief that predates this organization by nearly a century. Golf is not primarily a physical contest, but a mental one. The way we think, respond, and carry ourselves under pressure on the course mirrors how we navigate life. That belief was articulated long before “mental wellness” entered the cultural lexicon by Bobby Jones, who understood that character, clarity, and composure mattered as much as talent.

This work represents a third-generation commitment to advancing that understanding in a modern and relevant way. Not as nostalgia. Not as symbolism. But as responsibility.

This vision is carried forward by Robert Jones Black as a modern application of the principles associated with his great-grandfather, Bobby Jones, particularly the understanding that golf is fundamentally a mental game. The goal is not to preserve a legacy symbolically, but to give it continued value by applying its lessons to the mental health realities facing young people today.

Our IMPACT

Generation Next Project exists to address youth mental health through the game of golf. We are grounded in the principles of Bobby Jones, and in one guiding belief that sits at the center of his wisdom: the mind rules everything. Golf reveals how our minds respond to pressure, failure, success, and expectation, making it a powerful and honest teacher. We use those moments to connect golf mental wellness directly to the game of life. Through shared experience and community, we give young people language, awareness, and tools for what they are already feeling. Our mission is to help the next generation learn how to think, respond, and carry confidence forward, on the course and beyond it.

HOW CHANGE YOUR COURSE IMPACTS MENTAL WELLNESS…

The Change Your Course curriculum is designed to help young people develop awareness of how they think, feel, and respond under pressure. Golf serves as the proving ground, but the lessons are intentionally transferable to life, relationships, academics, and identity development. Curriculum is not delivered in isolation — it is practiced within community, where reflection, discussion, and shared experience deepen understanding and retention.

Change Your Course Mental Framework

The curriculum is built on the belief that mental wellness improves when individuals can recognize patterns in their thinking and emotional responses. Golf is uniquely effective because it exposes pressure, expectation, fear, confidence, and self-talk in real time, without the need to manufacture scenarios. Rather than correcting performance, the framework focuses on awareness, helping participants notice what is happening internally before attempting to change it. This approach reduces judgment and increases curiosity, both of which are essential for sustainable mental growth.

Core Modules

The Change Your Course curriculum is organized into a set of core modules, each representing a common mental and emotional experience encountered on the golf course and in life. These modules include:

  • First Tee Jitters – navigating anxiety, anticipation, and fear of judgment

  • Pressure Putt – managing situational pressure and expectations

  • Birdies and Bogeys – responding to success and adversity with balance

  • Pin Seeking – understanding risk, reward, and decision-making

  • The Leaderboard – separating self-worth from outcomes and comparison

  • The Caddie – recognizing the influence of relationships and external voices

Each module gives participants language for experiences they already have but may not know how to articulate.

Four Areas of Focus Within Every Module

Every Change Your Course module is delivered through four consistent areas of focus, ensuring a holistic and credible learning experience.

  • The Golf Lesson explains how the scenario shows up during play and what typically triggers the mental response.

  • The Life Lesson connects the same mental pattern to situations outside golf, such as school, social dynamics, or personal expectations.

  • The Mental Lesson helps participants identify thoughts, emotions, and self-talk associated with the scenario, without labeling them as good or bad.

  • The Science Lesson grounds the experience in age-appropriate neuroscience and psychology, helping participants understand why their brain responds the way it does under pressure.

This structure reinforces that mental experiences are normal, explainable, and trainable.

Practice Exercises for Golf and Life

Each module includes practical exercises designed to help participants tune their mental engagement rather than suppress or control it. On the golf side, exercises may involve intentional routines, awareness prompts, or pressure simulations. On the life side, exercises translate those same skills into daily situations such as preparing for a test, handling conflict, or managing expectations. This dual application reinforces that the mental skills practiced on the course are relevant and useful off the course as well.

Curriculum Delivery: Digital and Live Integration

The Change Your Course curriculum is delivered through both online modules and live event clinics, intentionally designed to reinforce one another. Live experiences create emotional awareness and trust through shared moments on the golf course. Digital modules extend those moments into ongoing practice, reflection, and conversation. Participants are encouraged to revisit modules as their life circumstances change, reinforcing that mastery is not a finish line but an ongoing process.

Curriculum and Community Working Together

Curriculum and community are intentionally interdependent. The curriculum provides structure, language, and shared reference points. The community provides context, reinforcement, and belonging. Participants do not simply learn a concept and move on; they see it reflected in the experiences and stories of others. This interaction transforms learning from information into identity, making mental wellness skills more durable and meaningful over time.

The Generation Next Project

Generation Next Project is on a mission to make a positive and direct impact on youth mental health, giving teens, parents and coaches the necessary tools and communication skills to thrive in today’s world, through the game of golf.
